ABOUT ALPHA PHI

1872

Alpha Phi was founded on September 18th, 1872 by ten women who were extremely passionate about the establishment of sisterhood values, and friendship beyond measure.

At a time when society looked upon women only as daughters, wives, and mothers—and therefore not in need of higher education—our ten Founders were pioneers of the coeducational system. Attending school with the handicap of implied, if not open, opposition, our Founders sought support from each other. There was a need for a social center, a place of conference, a tie which should unite, a circle of friends who could sympathize with one another in their perplexities. They formed Alpha Phi in 1872 at Syracuse University. Today, Alpha Phi continues to provide a "tie which unites, a circle of friends" for women young and old all around the world. From hand to hand and heart to heart, we are all grateful and proud of the legacy left to us by our Founders.

The sisterhood of Alpha Phi stretches from coast to coast through 171 collegiate campuses and more than 200,000 members. Sisters share a commitment to excellence and a strong desire to help one another and their communities.  Alpha Phis are leaders, scholars, contributors and lifetime members of a sisterhood that values these traits.

Organizational policy

Alpha Phi has taken steps to review and implement policy-level changes, including a Human Dignity Policy. Acting in such a way that preserves and prioritizes an individual’s human dignity is every member’s obligation. The Human Dignity Policy more explicitly outlines the organization’s expectations for our members. As stated in Alpha Phi International Policies & Procedures:

Alpha Phi prohibits behaviors that intend to be, or are reasonably foreseeable to be, undignified, threatening, intimidating, bullying, or harassing to another person or group within member activities. This behavior includes, but is not limited to lying, cheating, theft, libel, slander, or illegal activity and/or participating in activities that are discriminatory, degrading and/or demeaning to others, including but not limited to activities or events-based age, race, sexual orientation, gender expression, national origin, religious preference, socioeconomic status, political affiliation or personal abilities.

There are three (3) sections to Alpha Phi’s Human Dignity Policy:

  • Ethical Behavior

  • Sexual Misconduct

  • Retaliation

In addition to the Human Dignity Policy, Alpha Phi also has a strict policy against hazing in any form.

Additionally, the term colony has been removed from all Alpha Phi governing documents.

Alpha Phi’s International Executive Board (IEB) voted to make changes to our membership recruitment policy and to remove the preferential treatment given to legacies during recruitment.  You can learn more about the change here.

Ethical Behavior

Alpha Phi prohibits behaviors that intend to be, or are reasonably foreseeable to be, undignified, threatening, intimidating, bullying, or harassing to another person or group or within member activities. This behavior includes but is not limited to lying, cheating, theft, libel, slander, or illegal activity and/or participating in activities that are discriminatory, degrading, and/or demeaning to others, including, but not limited to, activities or events based on religion, socioeconomic status, race, gender expression, sexual orientation or personal abilities.

Alpha Phi firmly repudiates actions and statements that negate the concepts of self-respect, personal development, equality, and dignity. Collegiate members will not join an auxiliary group for another fraternal organization, such as being a “big Sister” or “Little Sister.”

Sexual Abuse and Harassment

Alpha Phi does not tolerate or condone any form of sexist or sexually abusive behavior on the part of its members, whether physical, mental, or emotional. This is to include any actions, activities, or events, whether on chapter premises or an off-site location which are demeaning, including but not limited to verbal harassment, sexual assault by individuals, or members acting together.

Hazing

No chapter, member, or alumna may conduct, participate in, or condone hazing activities. Hazing activities are defined as: “Any action taken, or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off Fraternity premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule.” for the purpose of recruiting, joining, pledging, initiating, admitting, affiliating, or for the purpose of retaining membership in the Fraternity, regardless of a person’s willingness to participate.

Retaliation

The Fraternity prohibits retaliation against any individual - members, and non-members - for reporting, inquiring, or cooperating with a report around a violation of the Alpha Phi Policies and Procedures. Retaliation is any action, statement, or behavior that is designed to punish an individual for filing a report, cooperating or participating in an investigation, seeking guidance regarding a compliance concern, or to deter one from taken such action.

Programming and education

Alpha Phi is committed to providing education and resources that build cultural competence to actively engage in conversations that challenge one another to uphold the highest tenets of Human Dignity. As Alpha Phis, we expect our members to live up to our High Ideals and to show the best qualities of character by being fair, inclusive and supportive, which is exemplified through the work of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion department. Please note that Alpha Phi does not expect our officers or volunteers to be experts on issues tackled by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion department. Everyone is learning and growing in their understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and related topics. It is always encouraged that officers and volunteers consult with subject matter experts who have strong professional experiences working with the topic, such as campus or community professionals.

Alpha Phi specifically created the programming area Stand Together to educate members on topics related to inclusivity and creating a welcoming environment. Through the programming in Stand Together, Alpha Phi helps members create a sense of belonging and connectedness that engages individuals in an authentic way where uniqueness is valued, respected and supported through opportunities and interaction. We are committed to providing education and resources that build cultural competence and to actively engage in conversations that challenge one another to be anti-racist.

In the summer of 2019, Alpha Phi introduced the Understanding Self and Others (USO) training, a curriculum to guide collegiate, ELC and alumnae advisors that specifically addresses identity, implicit bias and the impact of language in our everyday lives.

The USO curriculum is now available to all collegiate members and alumnae advisors on LEARN Alpha Phi for facilitation within their chapter. Expanding the USO curriculum to all members is specifically aimed at influencing and shaping Alpha Phi’s recruitment practices at a macro level. These education and training efforts have led to shifts in a number of practices, including ELC training and during chapter spirit weeks.

Alpha Phi also provides access to a two –part e-series called The Value of Equity, Inclusion and Diversity that is accessible on our learning management system called LEARN Alpha Phi. Part one defines equity, inclusion and diversity and their importance to the ongoing growth of the chapters. Part two features scenarios where the learned must make decisions, in uncomfortable situations, on the best course of action.

In addition, our Leadership Programming Consultants (LPCs) along with the HWA staff team are trained to lead the Foundations of DEI curriculum, USO curriculum, among many others to connect to our support to DEI initiatives.
